Team Reed will be hosting its 9th annual Reed Havlik Memorial Golf Tournament. This year's tournament will take on a larger mission in honoring Reed's memory by making more of a local community impact in his honor, as well as continuing our ongoing fight to find a cure for VWM Disease. Over the last 9 years, Team Reed has raised over $200,000 to fight Vanishing White Matter Disease and find a cure. As we continue to commit to contributing to this vital work, Jesse and I have decided we would like to also make a more significant impact in Reed’s honor in areas of our community that were important to Reed. 

Regarding the critical work being done to find a cure for Vanishing White Matter Disease. Currently, two human clinical trials are being conducted. In Amsterdam, the Guanabenz trial is winding down after 4 years of testing, and the trial has been shown to stabilize the patient's disease, which is hopeful and promising, as we wait for official publication results regarding the drug. The second trial started in Utah two years ago, testing a brand-new drug now called Fosigotifator. This trial has been very exciting as word of mouth from those in the trial has shared some very encouraging experiences with the drug, with some experiencing slight improvements in their disease progress. The current goal of this trial is to enroll more patients in the trial and start testing younger patients. There is also a third area of study for finding a cure for VWM disease: the focus being gene replacement therapy. This is where Reed’s largest impact has been. In October 2021, Reed donated a skin sample to research being done in Utah. This research is studying stem cell replacement therapy.  As far as we know, Reed is the only donor to this project. These cells are the lab’s prized possession. Tests being done with these mice in the lab may have Reed’s cells involved in the testing.  Because of your continued support in to Team Reed, we have been able to not only contribute to this study with Reed’s cells but also be able to advance these studies financially. 

We are heartbroken to share that on December 19th, 2024, Reed ran into Jesus’ arms. His body fought so hard, but it was time for him to be free of what this terrible disease did to his body. Reed was diagnosed ten years ago with Vanishing White Matter Disease, a rare and degenerative terminal brain disease, Leukodystrophy. Vanishing White Matter is much like it sounds: the white matter in Reed’s brain disappeared, and as this happened, Reed lost almost all of his independence. Ten years ago, Jesse and I committed to advocating and sharing our journey with Reed with the hope of finding a cure for Reed. While our focus was certainly a fight for Reed, we were able to connect with so many others facing a similar future as we were, creating a community for us who we continue to fight for today in honor of Reed. We hope that by sharing Reed’s life, he has made a lasting impact on many, and his memory will live on forever as someone who loved life, smiled big, and brought so much joy to all. We hope his life made an impact on you on how to live life with hope and purpose no matter what you face.

We have faith that a cure will be found soon so that no parent has to experience the loss of a child and the agonizing heartache we are facing. VWM affects roughly 300 people worldwide, with most of that number being children. As we now navigate life without Reed, we have found peace in continuing our mission to find a cure, but as stated above, we would also like to establish a lasting memorial for Reed within our community by making an impact in areas of our community that were important to Reed and us.
