Team Reed will be hosting its 8th Team Reed Golf Tournament to help Finding A Cure for Vanishing White Matter Disease. Over the last 8 years, Team Reed has raised just over $200,000 to fight this terrible disease and find a cure. We are committed to continuing to contribute to helping this very important work. In October 2021, Reed donated a skin sample to research being done in Utah that is studying stem cell replacement therapy.  Reed is the only donor to this project, his cells are the lab’s prized possession, all tests being done with mice in the lab have Reed’s cells involved in the testing.  Because of your contribution to Team Reed, we have been able to not only contribute to this research with Reed’s cells but also financially be able to advance the research. 

Reed was diagnosed nine years ago with a rare and degenerative terminal brain disease, Leukodystrophy, specifically Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWM/CACH). Vanishing White Matter is much like it sounds: the white matter in Reed’s brain is disappearing, and as this happens Reed has lost almost all of his independence. He will eventually suffer from organ failure, which will lead to death. We have pledged to help contribute whatever we can to VWM research. VWM is extremely rare. Currently, there is no cure or treatment available, and the average life expectancy is 5 – 10 years from the onset of the disease, however there are currently two human trials being conducted in Amsterdam and Utah.  As VWM is so rare, there is limited financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to research and develop a cure, so the studies that are being done are from private researchers. Unfortunately, there is minimal funding available for these researched to continue researching a cure for children like Reed. So, a lot of the financial burden falls on the families to help however we can. There are roughly only 300 children worldwide with VWM disease.
